Social-Emotional Learning

It's time to talk to children about the pandemic and how they feel about the future. Life as we knew it will resume, but it will not be the same. We have changed. The activities in this workbook are designed to help children and families transition out of the pandemic and into the New Normal. Based on the work of Dr. Violet Oaklander, each exercise includes a guided creative activity that allows students to explore and express their thoughts about the future.

Using the Oaklander Model:

A Guidebook for Therapists and Counselors Working with Children, Adolescents and Families

by Karen Fried PsyD LMFT

and
Christine McKenna LMFT LPCC

This guidebook serves as a companion to the Oaklander Training Program Violet developed after publishing Windows to Our Children. Child and adolescent therapists came from all over the world to attend her life-changing two-week intensive workshops in Santa Barbara, California. This training continues in Santa Monica, California (led by Karen Fried) and in other United States and international venues by facilitators whom Violet trained, including Lynn Stadler and Peter Mortola. While this guidebook is meant to be used by therapists who have participated in Violet's training process, that experience is not a requirement.

Praise for the book:

The workbook is absolutely unbelievable!  I am ever so impressed with the time and thoughtfulness that clearly went into it.  What a contribution to Violet’s legacy.  Thank you.
- Claire Mercurio (founding VSOF board member)

Train with Karen:

Karen Fried offers training, supervision/consultation and presentations on how to use the Oaklander Model in your own work with children, adolescents, and their families.

All offerings continue Violet's tone of fun, educational and experiential training for therapists featuring a variety of materials including drawing, puppets, clay, sand tray, picture cards and more! Current training opportunities are provided virtually on Zoom.
